Schulman, who’s currently working on an oral history of ACT-UP, remembered that she’d never heard the name Jesus Christ until one day in her schoolyard. “I ran home and asked my grandmother ‘Who is Jesus Christ?’ and my grandmother said, “Well, there was this girl named Mary who got in trouble and made up this story.’”
Priceless. (Link courtesy of FAWARB.)
Brilliant! One hopes Grandma took the opportunity to discuss some of the more credulity-stretching stories of the Tanakh while she was at it.
Tanakh… weren’t they the aliens on Star Trek who only spoke in metaphor? “Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra” and all that?
That reminds me of one of my favorite lines from Grey’s Anatomy. It went something like this.
“Maybe God wants us to be together.”
“You think GOD wants you to have an adulterous affair?”
“Hey, God got a virgin pregnant by magic. God doesn’t play fair.”
I had to rewind the TiVO a few times for that one. Loved it!
“Tanakh… weren’t they the aliens on Star Trek who only spoke in metaphor? “Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra” and all that?”
Shut up. Just, shut up.
Talk to my mother. She’ll tell you just how well that command ever worked on me (that is to say, not at all).
[...] Jesus who?: [...]
I metaphor once….wasn’t impressed. ::rimshot::
I’m still in love with Wonder Woman. I mean, Linda Carter had the most awesome hair!!
