Lazy

That’s the word that best describes my writing output lately. This is not meant to elicit sympathy; rather, I’m putting it out here publicly in order to shame myself into gluing my ass to the chair and working more. I have two essays in mind that I want to write, that aforementioned letter to my long-lost English teacher (which is partially written, but even then only in my head, so it doesn’t count), and about 12,000 more words to write in the novel. Oh, and a short story to finish.

Did I also mention I have the idea for my next book? I realize that’s getting a little ahead of myself, but it’s good to have plans.

It’s not so good to have plans you never put into action.

Do you know when I’ve been doing most of my writing? (That’s a rhetorical question, see; of course you don’t know the answer, so I’m going to tell you.) At the gym. I do a set, drink water, flip to the last page in my workout notebook, and write a couple sentences. Then it’s time for the next set. Granted, I wrote about (pauses to do math) a little under a thousand words that way over the last week, but this is not the most optimal arrangement.

Regardless, from now on, when I glue my ass to a chair, it must not be the one that is in front of the TV.

  • Sofas are so much better than chairs for the TV. I’m just sayin’.

  • Hey, that’s a great idea– write in between sets.
I’m going to try that– though usually i’m oogling the other guys in the gym in between my sets. ahem.

Personally, I think you spend a lot more time on-line than you spend watching TV … but that’s just my perspective. ;-)

That’s not inaccurate either, which is why I’ve been writing more in my paper notebook lately (perhaps you’ve noticed). Also, you have to remember that in my old house, I didn’t have cable and I turned on the TV maybe once a week to watch a DVD. Sometimes weeks would go by and I wouldn’t turn it on. That may give you some idea how much I fucking hate TV more often than not.

I never said that my perspective wasn’t a selfish one. When we watch TV, I get to look at you and marvel at my good fortune. When you’re upstairs surfing the net, or even writing, I get no such luck.

Aww, now how can I argue with that?

  • Awww.

But anyway, some of my best ideas occur to me at the gym too. Clearly I don’t go there anywhere near enough.

My writer’s block has been excrutiating lately. I’m forcing myself to write daily just to try and get over it.

    You’ll get back to it.
