People live in a place like Kirkwood for a lot of reasons. It’s a pretty suburb within easy reach of downtown St. Louis and most of the major attractions in the area. It has a good school district, a Main Street-type atmosphere in its business district, and it feels safe. It’s the type of place where you wouldn’t be afraid to walk around at night.
So yesterday’s shooting at a City Council meeting is jarring in many ways. That sort of thing just doesn’t happen in the suburbs, so it gets a lot of media play, not only locally but nationally. By contrast, the shootings that occurred at the end of our street (which I affectionately call the corner of Crack and Ho) last weekend garnered barely a few lines of coverage by the Post-Dispatch, and I couldn’t even find a mention of the shooting victim a neighbor found at the end of our alley last Friday.
That’s the sort of thing you expect to happen all the time around here, in one of those places. It’s not the sort of thing you’d expect to happen somewhere like the suburbs.
So in our case, it’s not news.
OMG, honey! I had no idea that happened! Now I shall commence worrying about you and Mikey. Ready? *worries*
The sad thing is, most people in St. Louis would have no idea that happened, either.
OMG…Mikey a.k.a. Goonie, that’s the cutest worry-ing I’ve ever seen! I LOVE IT! lol!
Seriously, Jeffrey, YIKES! That scares the hardened armor right out of my tough, souless being! Of, couse even the most minor thing can scare my hardened armor right off my tough souless being, like scary movies, clowns, weird little quiet children. So, a shooting at the end of MY street would cause my heart to stop beating!
Mikey,
I didn’t tell ya because I didn’t want you to fret.
Now you’re fretting aren’t you?
And fretting makes you puffy.
–Mikey
That was acting. Thank you.
EEK! I’m worried, too! Please be careful!
As for your comment to Mikey+1, I’m confused! Do you mean that you’re Brenda? That you shot Brenda in your neighborhood? She shot her camel toe?
I didn’t know you lived in one of THOSE neighborhoods. Yeesh. Perhaps I shan’t be in such a hurry to arrange a visit.
